Copyright James Ngugi 1965; first published by William Heinemann 1965 and in the AFRICAN WRITERS SERIES the same year; reprinted 1966, 1967, 1969 (twice) and 1970 — this copy. SBN 435 90017 X; printed by Unwin Brothers at the Gresham Press. Set on the ridges of Kameno and Makuyu, it turns on the split between Christian converts and those holding to Gikuyu custom, and on the circumcision controversy.
