Copyright James Ngugi 1964; first published 1964 and in the African Writers Series the same year; reprinted 1965, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1974; RESET 1976; reprinted 1978, 1980, 1981 and 1983 — this copy. ISBN 0 435 90007 2. A note on the imprint page records that the edition “has been completely reset and page numbers do not now correspond with earlier editions”. The byline has changed too: the earlier copy reads JAMES NGUGI, this one NGUGI WA THIONG’O, the name he took in 1970. The epigraph is Walt Whitman’s “On the Beach at Night”, from which the title comes. THIS COPY CARRIES AN INK SIGNATURE on the half-title and a DICKINSON COLLEGE STORE price sticker of $2.50 — an American campus bookshop, so it was a set text somewhere.
