A double number in two halves — Trinidad and Tobago, under the national motto We Aspire, We Achieve, and Canada and the Caribbean. It opens with an address by the Honourable George Chambers and includes Helen Pyne-Timothy on Trinidad Creole, Ken I. Boodhoo and Ivan C. Harnanan on Eric Williams’s Caribbean vision, Ian McDonald’s memoir of Williams, fiction by Jan Carew, Félix Morisseau-Leroy’s Boat People, and a dialogue between Lord Kitchener and the Mighty Sparrow edited by Dathorne himself. The Canadian half carries Frank Birbalsingh on the Toronto novels of Austin Clarke, Cyril Dabydeen on West Indians writing in Canada, and Paula Denice McClaine on the political culture of Afro-Canadians. The issue is dedicated to the memory of Frantz Leroy, who had guest-edited the journal’s Haiti number, and Cheddi Jagan now appears among the editorial consultants. A leaf of Association business lists the 1985 officers — Jan Carew as president, Dathorne as treasurer — and an honorary committee running from Aimé Césaire in Martinique to Sam Selvon in Canada and Lady Hetta Empson in the United Kingdom.
