THE TOM MBOYA MEMORIAL ISSUE, published two months after his assassination in Nairobi on 5 July 1969. Iconoclastes writes “Kenya without Mboya”, and eleven tributes follow: DR A. MILTON OBOTE, BETHWELL A. OGOT, Robert Gardiner of the ECA, LESTER PEARSON, ALI A. MAZRUI (“Tom Mboya, Underdevelopment, and I”), Colin Legum, Humphrey Slade, J. Dennis Akumu on Mboya the trade unionist, J. D. Otiende, and Dharam Ghai on Mboya as a modernizer. Mboya had sat on the Institute’s Board of Governors and had written for the journal himself in March 1967.
