Spring 1967, and the journal has grown a staff: Ẹzekiel Mphahlele and John Povey join as assistant editors for African literature, over a bench of consultants that includes Gwendolyn Carter, St. Clair Drake, Joseph Greenberg, Gerald Moore, Roy Sieber and Obi Wali at Nsukka. The editorial argues for African critical standards for African literature and the arts. Daniel P. Kunene writes on a Basotho war song, André Ilunga-Kabongo on Les Damnés de la Terre, and Robert Green on the criticism of African literature; there are poems by Dennis Brutus, Michael J. C. Echeruo (for Christopher Okigbo), Lemuel Johnson and Ẹzekiel Mphahlele, fiction by Peter Ruoro and Lemuel Johnson, and an excerpt from Oyekan Owomoyela’s filmscript. Don Dodson introduces the Kenyan artist Hezbon Owiti, whose linocuts Goddess of Animals and Dancers are the front and back covers, and John Povey profiles Dennis Brutus. This is also the first issue to carry What’s on Our Minds, a page of casual conversation with the editors, which explains the awkward name and asks readers to make out cheques “either the full name, or simply JONALA.”
