Volume XVII, Number 1, May 1987 — an issue in two parts, the first given entirely to LANGUAGE PLANNING and introduced by Maurice Tadadjeu of the Université de Yaoundé. AYỌ BAMGBOṢE asks “When is language planning not planning?”; Beban Sammy Chumbow proposes a language planning model for Africa; Tadadjeu writes on the linguistic factor in the Cameroonian social project; Etienne Sadembouo and John Watters propose a scheme for evaluating how far a written language has developed; Mary Annett explores urban mother-tongue literacy; and Ursula Wiesemann on standardising a language. Part II carries Zygmunt Frajzyngier on encoding the locative in Chadic, Ellen Jackson on direct and indirect speech in Tikar, and BRUCE CONNELL on noun classification in Lower Cross — the subject he would return to in this journal in 1994 and in JALL in 1995.
