The editorial note is the most substantial in the run: Hansford apologises for omitting one from the previous issue, and pays tribute to Robert Hedinger, editor since 1992, who asked to be released to return to linguistic and translation work in Cameroun, and to Rhonda Hartell, associate editor since the same year. Hansford introduces himself — twenty-three years with the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation, working with his wife Gillian among the Chumburung, with an interest in serial verb constructions — notes a dearth of articles on the western half of West Africa, and announces that Ngessimo Mutaka has agreed to become assistant editor. The articles: Flavien Gbéto on the UPT in the Gbe languages; Issa Takassi on numeration in Ncam; Ekhato Otamere Imasuen on Edo and Portuguese in contact; two papers by Ngessimo M. Mutaka and Ngoran Loveline Lenaka on Nso politeness strategies in schoolgirls’ letters and on the uses of oral abuse by older women; Olaoba F. Arasanyin on language and the class divide in Nigeria; and Douglas Boone, Silué Lamine and MaryAnne Augustin on French and Adioukrou among the Aïzi.
