Kovave Vol. 1, No. 1

The first issue of Kovave, November 1969 — the first literary magazine published in Papua New Guinea. Ulli Beier had co-founded Black Orpheus in Ìbàdàn and helped build the Mbari Club before moving to Papua New Guinea in 1967; two years later he founded this journal alongside the Papua Pocket Poets series, carrying the same editorial method with him. The title names the first initiation ceremony at Orokolo, in the Papuan Gulf. Covers and vignettes throughout the run are by Georgina Beier, as they had been in Nigeria.
