About this Book
The proceedings of the Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and Linguistics 1981, chaired and edited by DEBORAH TANNEN and published in 1982. ISBN 0-87840-116-4; ISSN 0196-7207; LC 58-31607. Its bibliographic notice explains the series’ own renaming: after 1973 the title dropped the monograph and meeting numbers and took the year instead, so it cites as GURT 1981. Contributors include Walter J. Ong on oral remembering and narrative structures, ROBIN TOLMACH LAKOFF on persuasive discourse and ordinary conversation, EMANUEL A. SCHEGLOFF on “uh huh” and other things that come between sentences, Frederick Erickson on topical cohesion among Italian-Americans, Alton L. Becker on Emerson on language, and Malcolm Coulthard with David Brazil on intonation in interaction.
