About this Book
THE BOOK THAT SET THE AGENDA FOR A GENERATION OF SYNTAX — deep structure and surface structure, the competence/performance distinction, the standard theory. This is the CLOTH EDITION in its dust jacket: copyright 1965 MIT, SECOND PRINTING, DECEMBER 1965; LC 65-19080. Its acknowledgement page is a document in itself — the book is “Special Technical Report Number 11 of the Research Laboratory of Electronics”, supported by the Joint Services Electronics Programs of the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, the NSF, the NIH and NASA, with the note that “reproduction in whole or in part is permitted for any purpose of the United States Government”. The preface is dated Cambridge, October 1964, and thanks Morris Halle, Paul Postal, Jerrold Katz, James McCawley and GEORGE MILLER, whose own Language and Speech is also on this shelf. THE LIBRARY HOLDS THIS TITLE TWICE — see the 1969 paperback.
