About this Book
Mario Pei’s dictionary of the field’s vocabulary, published as a Doubleday Anchor Original (A497) at $1.95. The imprint page states that “the Anchor Books edition is the first publication of Glossary of Linguistic Terminology” — so this paperback is the first edition, not a reprint of a hardback. Anchor Books edition 1966, Library of Congress catalog card number 66-21013. Pei was Professor of Romance Philology at Columbia, born in Rome in 1901 and brought to the United States in 1908; during the war he built a thirty-seven-language course in “War Linguistics” at Columbia and broadcast for Radio Free Europe, the OWI and the Voice of America. The cover shows the book’s own entry for morphemics torn from a page.
