A collaboration between the neurophysiologist WILLIAM H. CALVIN and the creolist DEREK BICKERTON, attempting to reconcile a Darwinian account of how language evolved with a Chomskyan account of what it is. Copyright 2000, MIT Press as a Bradford Book; ISBN 0-262-03273-2; designed and set in Palatino by Calvin himself. Bickerton’s presence makes this the collection’s bridge to creole studies — his work on Hawaiian Creole and the language bioprogram hypothesis sits behind the argument. The copyright page still prints the authors’ email addresses and a URL for corrections, a small artefact of publishing at the turn of the century.
