THE ONE AFRICAN-PUBLISHED BOOK IN THE COLLECTION, and the one closest to the Library’s own purpose. A practical orthography primer for Hanga, a Gur language of northern Ghana, written by DAVID LANGA and produced by the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation at Tamale — the same GILLBT where Keir Hansford, later editor of the Journal of West African Languages, spent twenty-three years. Copyright 1995 GILLBT; catalogue number RP-HG-11-01-100; funded by GILLBT’s Material Development Sector. Its own statement of purpose is exact: “This book is written for Hangasi who are educated in English and want to learn to read and write or teach their own language, Hanga.” Ten chapters cover vowels, consonants, pronunciation and dialect variation, punctuation and reported speech, compound words, tone and stress, demonstratives and numbers, closing with spellings, sentences and answers.
