About this Book
Copyright 1966 by Dillon Press; THIRD PRINTING; LC 57-9704; cover design by Margaret MacInnes. Produced for the UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA HUMANITIES PROGRAM. Part One, “Before Darwin”, runs from Buffon, Goethe, Erasmus Darwin, Lamarck, Lyell and Chambers through the social philosophers — MALTHUS, HEGEL, MARX and SPENCER. It is the furthest from linguistics of anything on this shelf, and earns its place the way Köhler and Asimov do: through the argument about where human capacities come from, which the Lieberman, Pope and Cavalli-Sforza volumes here take up directly.
