JULIUS NYERERE’s “Ujamaa: The Basis of African Socialism” and JEAN-PAUL SARTRE on “The Political Thought of Patrice Lumumba” — Sartre’s long essay, later the preface to Lumumba’s collected speeches. Two Nigerian scholars appear: S. O. BIOBAKU on historical aspects of acculturation and ADEBOYE BABALOLA on YORÙBÁ POETRY. ABIOLA IRELE contributes “Thoughts on African Language Problems”. Also Geneviève Calame-Griaule on the oral tradition as an art form, Erica Simon on negritude, and a short story by Mokambo Bambote. NOTE ON THE NUMBERING: THE COVER READS “Vol. 18, No. 47” and the contents page inside reads “English Edition Vol. 19” — the journal contradicts itself. No. 46 also carries Vol. 18 on its cover, so the two consecutive numbers share a volume number on their covers. Both readings are given here as printed.
