About this Book
Audrey I. Richards’s functional study of nutrition among the Southern Bantu, with a preface by BRONISLAW MALINOWSKI, whose student she was. First printed by Routledge & Kegan Paul; this is the first Meridian printing of March 1964 (M169, $1.75), reprinted by arrangement and printed in the United States by The Free Press; Library of Congress catalog card number 64-14099. Its chapters move from nutrition as a biological process to nutrition as a social activity, then through food and family sentiment in Bantu society — infancy, weaning, childhood, adolescence, paternal authority, the distribution of food in the kinship group — and on to food production and incentives to work. The title is of its period and is given here as printed on the book.
