About this Book
Abraham Kaplan’s survey of contemporary world philosophies, copyright 1961, issued as a Vintage paperback (V-235) at $1.65. The preface explains its origin: these were lectures delivered at UCLA in the autumn of 1959 and the spring of 1960 under the University of California Extension Division, with the “Freud and Modern Philosophy” chapter based on the 1956 Freud Centenary Lecture. Kaplan examined the Asian philosophies at first hand on a Rockefeller Foundation grant and wrote the book at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford. Its chapters run from pragmatism and ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY — the reason it sits in a linguistics collection — through existentialism and Freud to Communism, Buddhism, Chinese and Indian philosophy and Zen.
