The classic Bell Telephone Laboratories account of how speech is produced, transmitted and heard, in the Anchor Science Study Series, 1973. PETER B. DENES took his PhD at London and from 1946 to 1961 lectured in experimental phonetics and ran the laboratory of the Phonetics Department at University College London, with a part-time appointment as physicist at the Audiology Unit of the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, before joining Bell Labs and becoming head of its Speech and Communication Research Department in 1967. ELLIOT N. PINSON came from Princeton, MIT and Caltech to Bell’s Technical Staff in 1961, working on speech analysis and synthesis and later computer graphics. This copy carries a K.U. BOOKSTORE sticker — bought second-hand at a university bookshop for $1.90.
