About this Book
PETER LADEFOGED — the phonetician who later worked on Defaka with KAY WILLIAMSON in JWAL XXVI.2, held in this Library. Copyright Oxford University Press 1967; first published 1967, REPRINTED 1969 and 1972 — this copy; paperback ISBN 0 19 437025 9. The preface opens “A phonetician has to have more talents than I have” and credits two physiologists, a psychologist and two communication engineers as co-authors of the underlying papers. Its central claim: that linguistic STRESS is a measurable bodily activity — a gesture of the respiratory muscles, specifiable as work done on the air in the lungs. Research supported by USPHS grant NB 04595.
