The second number of Okike, still edited by Chinua Achebe from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Like the first, it belongs to the short run the journal produced in post-war eastern Nigeria before its editor left for the United States. Early issues are among the scarcest African literary periodicals of the period; few complete runs survive on the continent. The issue opens with three poems by Chinweizu and carries Achebe’s Civil Peace alongside his poem Remembrance Day, with fiction by I. N. C. Aniebo and poems by Kalu Uka, Ifeanyi Menkiti, Onwuchekwa Jemie, Nathan Nkala and Gaius Anoka, and reviews by Donatus Nwoga and Kalu Uka. Dennis Brutus appears twice: under his own name, and as John Bruin — the pseudonym under which his banned work was published in South Africa.
