About this Issue
Number 5, June 1974. C. L. Innes joins the masthead as assistant editor, and the founding committee is printed in full — E. N. Obiechina, M. J. C. Echeruo, Ulli Beier, Romanus Egudu, Wole Soyinka, V. Chukwuemeka Ike, Bernth Lindfors, Edward Brathwaite and Miriam Reik. Contributors include Rasheed A. Gbadamosi, Kofi Awoonor, Stanley Macebuh on African aesthetics, Samuel Allen, John Munonye, Dudley Randall, Ossie Onuora Enekwe, Chinweizu and Ezekiel Mphahlele, with drawings by Anne Nwokoye and Obiora Udechukwu. One leaf is given over to a page headed What Readers Said About Okike, collecting notices from Pearse Hutchinson at Leeds, Mphahlele in Denver, Dennis Brutus at Northwestern, Kalu Uka at Nsukka, Molly Mahood at Kent, Edward Blishen on the BBC and the Lagos Daily Times — a useful record of how quickly the magazine had established itself abroad. The back cover carries the NOK Publishers advertisement for the Traditional African Literature series under Awoonor’s general editorship.
